Port Coquitlam, BC – True to its mandate of bringing contemporary dance to nontraditional venues, Triadic Dance Works is proud to present six original dances at the intimate Second Storey Theatre.
Triadic is an emerging dance collective, comprised of three graduates of SFU’s School for the Contemporary Arts. After collaborating throughout University, Philippa Myler, Jennifer Aoki and Jenn Edwards co-founded the company in the Spring of 2010. Since then they have been performing in mixed programs all over the lower mainland, often hosted by atypical venues such as Anne McDonald Hall in North Vancouver, Spectral Theatre, and the H.R. MacMillan Space Centre. Stories From The Second Floor will be Triadic’s second full-length performance at Second Storey Theatre.
This eclectic evening includes choreography by all three company members, as well as guest artist Natalie Gan. It will also feature original music by SFU music students Remy Siu and Jacob Liljenwall, with some live accompaniment by Siu and colleagues.
Each short work is a distinct entity. Aoki’s Newsworthy deconstructs news media conventions to create a bizarre, unpredictable world, while Gan draws on the concept of escapism to build a subtle yet complex movement vocabulary. In more light-hearted pieces, Myler makes robots endearing, while Edwards explores a problematic romance in Slow Dance. Accessible and deeply personal, these dances act as short stories, essays and poems torn from six different books, yet connected by the three bodies enacting them.
